Appearance of Teeth Distortion in Face Scans

The Bellus3D face scanning app utilizes the 3D active stereo depth capturing systems found in the Apple iPhone X, iPhone 11 and iPad Pro products. Users of Bellus3D Dental Pro will observe that the appearance of the subject's teeth within a 3D face scan appear distorted or bent. This is a well known by-product of the nature of the face scanning system used in these consumer devices.  Bellus3D face scanning solutions are not a replacement for the highly specialized intraoral and dental scanners. Those specialized scanners have been designed to meet the high accuracy and resolution demands of scanning teeth.

Bellus3D Dental Pro compliments the use dental scanners by enabling the integration of the lifelike quality of Bellus3D 3D face scans  with the high resolution and specialized dental scans.

To accomplish this integration, Dental Pro provides automatic and manual editing tools to create an opening in the 3D photographic scan for revealing the 3D dental scan model that matches the patient. The tools provided include: a lip line cutout editor and our Visual Smile Aligner tool that provides offset and rotation tools to align the 3D face scan to the dental scan. Here is a visual diagram that illustrates this process:
