What are witnesses?

The Smoke blockchain is a decentralized platform. The blockchain is operated by so-called witnesses, or block producers.

Every 3 seconds a new block is produced by a witness. All operations on the blockchain, like posts, comments, upsmokes, wallet transfers, even flags are stored as a “transaction” in these blocks.

Because the Smoke blockchain is operated by multiple witnesses, spread around the world, and with servers in many data centers around the world the blockchain is decentralized. Not one person operates everything, but multiple witnesses do it.

This makes the blockchain censor-resilient because it becomes harder for people to remove the content or take out the company which operates, and hosts, all content.

The Smoke blockchain is governed according to the DPOS system (Delegated Proof of Stake). In DPOS every user can vote on up to 30 witnesses. The Top 20 witnesses are the Governance, the other witnesses are the backup witnesses.

You can vote for witnesses here.
