Block notifications on Chrome

Issue:

Notifications are popping up in Chrome randomly.

Solution:

Use following steps to block notifications. .
  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. Click the three-dot menu icon in the browser’s upper-right corner and select “Settings.”
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, click “Advanced,” then click the “Site Settings” option under the “Privacy and security” header.
  4. Click “Notifications” on the screen that appears next.
  5. Click the toggle next to “Ask before sending (recommended).” That’ll cause the toggle to turn from blue to gray and the text to change to “Blocked.”
    Use following step to block notifications for a website that you have previously granted notification permission. This must be done for each website that you want to block.
  6. To block a specific site that has been granted permission previously, scroll down to the "Allow" section and click on the three-dot menu to the right of the site you want to block. Choose "Block" to block future notifications from that site. The site will be added to the "Block" list above.
Notifications are allowed on a case by case basis when a website is first visited. Many websites "offer" notifications. To avoid notifications from all websites in the future, click "Block."

Explanation

A bewildering number of websites will request permission to show notifications on your computer when you first visit the site. The permission request looks like this:

If you choose "allow" by accident, the site will have permission to display notifications at any time in the future. Depending on the site, these notifications will range from mildly annoying to highly inappropriate. Sometimes the notifications will make it look the computer has been hacked or infected by malware. Once you click "Allow" the site will be added to the Allow list and must be removed as described above in #6.
