Which Intel® RealSense™ depth camera is recommended for use with Dot3D Scan/Pro?

Of the current lineup of Intel® RealSense™ depth cameras (L515, D455, D415, D435, D435i), we primarily recommend the L515 and D455 for the best results when paired with Dot3D for 3D scanning purposes. While there are many factors at play here, the key takeaway is that the noise levels are higher with the other RealSense™ cameras (fuzzier data, more stray points). The L515 offers the highest precision and longest range, but will not function in daylight / window light and struggles with certain surfaces (blacks/grays/shiny). The D455 is the successor to the D415/D435/D435i and works great indoors and out (even in bright sunlight), but the resulting data is less precise than the L515 / DPI-10 / DPI-10SR. For the least noisy, most accurate resulting data without significant window light or dark surface limitations, users should also consider the calibrated PrimeSense depth cameras built into our DPI line of complete 3D scanning kits. These also will not work in direct sunlight, but are compatible with all of the above RealSense cameras as add-ons.

NOTE: While the D455 will work in direct sunlight, the resulting data may sometimes have a pinkish tint. If you are looking for the most true colors in bright sunlight, you may want to consider the D415 (although it is otherwise less precise and shorter range than the D455). Other benefits of the D415 include price, size, and weight. We do not recommend the D435 / D435i over any of the other options, but they are also supported.
