Dot3D Dark Areas After Optimization

Dot3D: Dark Areas After Scene Optimization

Q: Some areas in the scene look too dark after optimizing the scene. How can that be avoided?

A: The darkening of areas is a trade off in the color leveling in the optimization pass. The color levelling infers the relative lighting conditions throughout the scene from the scan data, projects all the colours into HDR space and then compresses things down again into a displayable color space using a tone mapping operator.
We plan to make the color levelling tunable, including choices of tone mapping operators, starting with Dot3D version 3.3.
