When creating a category in the Campus Compass, there are a few best practices to keep in mind.
While there is no limit to the number of categories that can be created, we recommend that no more than 10-20 be made. Each category should be able to apply to multiple locations or multiple services at a location and act as a broad funnel to direct the student to the specific thing that they need. Once they click on a category, the student will be able to choose from a list of services or locations that are available to them based on their enrollment and attendance restrictions. So there is no need to create a category for each and every service or location.

1. Categories can be created for a specific location (Advising), or they can be created for a type of location (centers that offer tutoring services.)

If the category is created for a specific location, it should be addressed toward the general type of service the student will receive at that location.
Example of a category created for a specific location:

If the category is created for a type of location, it should be addressed toward the general type of service the student will receive at all of the locations.

2. The name of the category should be written as an "I" statement.  This allows students to self-identify with the category and choose the one that best applies to the service that they are looking for.  Some examples below include:

3. In general, the description of the category should
not be too specific about locations or services and should be helpful and encouraging and be addressed to the student. This allows the category to be assigned to multiple locations or services ensuring that the student doesn't have to search through a large selection of categories.
