The pre-budget government announcement in response to the COVID-19 virus outbreak, that SSP will be made available from day 1 of sickness for employees, unsurprisingly raised questions on how this would be implemented and delivered on the ground for both payroll and or employment software providers and their customers.

With today’s (11/03/20) budget announcement, the government delivered the news regarding a SSP rebate for employers. This was followed up with an update and clarification to all HMRC recognised Payroll Software providers stipulating that “We recognise that existing systems are not designed to facilitate such employer refunds for SSP. The government will work with stakeholders over the coming months to set up a repayment mechanism as soon as possible”.
