Point-of-Sale Hardware Recommendations

Point-of-Sale Hardware Recommendations

Is there any special equipment required to use Orchid POS?

Orchid POS is a cloud-based browser application, which means you can use it on any device that supports the Google Chrome web browser. This includes desktops, all-in-one computers with a touch screen, laptops, iPads, and Android devices.

Because Orchid POS is cloud-based, our servers are doing the heavy lifting. This allows a high degree of flexibility in terms of supported hardware.

Typically, stores choose to have at least one workstation (laptop, desktop, or all-in-one) with a standard monitor size (13 - 15 inches) for back office work.

Our pricing plans have no restrictions on how many devices or registers access Orchid POS.

IMPORTANT: To avoid complications from damaged or counterfeit equipment, always buy your equipment new, and from a reputable US based seller.

Computer:

Orchid POS will run on any device which supports the Google Chrome web browser.

This includes: Desktops, All-In-Ones, Laptops, iPads, and Android devices.

In general, Windows based PCs offer the most compatibility with a wide range of peripherals (including printers).

For optimal system performance when using a desktop or laptop, it is recommended that your system includes the following:

ComponentRecommended MinimumNotes
Operating SystemWindows 10 or newer
macOS 12(Monterey)
It is important to keep your operating system up to date for security purposes.
Microsoft has discontinued security updates for older operating systems (including Windows 7, XP and Vista), which leaves these systems vulnerable to malware.
RAM16 GBModern operating systems require about 8 GB for their own use.
If your system only has 8 GB, you may experience performance issues when there are many browser tabs open.
Disk Storage (HDD)No requirementAll of your Orchid POS data is stored securely in the cloud, which means you don't have to worry about local storage or backup.

Note: You do NOT need a Solid-State Drive (SSD).
These are commonly recommended by retail outlets as an "up-sell". SSDs are absolutely unnecessary unless you require a 30-second bootup time.
USB Ports5+ PortsUSB ports are used for virtually all peripherals (printers, barcode scanners, etc.)
Additional USB ports can easily be added with a USB hub.

The specification requirements mentioned in the table above don't apply to mobile devices or tablets.

Android and iOS devices will use their own apps which have been optimized for each system.

Cash Drawer:

Most cash drawers plug directly into your receipt printer, not into the computer.

As a result, any cash drawer with the proper interface for your receipt printer will work.

MS Cash Drawer and APG are the most widely known and used.

NOTE: Customer (pole) display is NOT supported at this time.

Barcode Scanner:

Barcode scanners are relatively universal.

Popular models include:

  • Zebra DS-4608 SR 1D/2D
  • Honeywell Voyager

Scanners can be wired or wireless, though we recommend wireless for use with the Physical Inventory tool.

Barcode Label Printer:

We recommend the Zebra ZD220 (USB connection) or ZD420 Direct Thermal (USB, wireless, Bluetooth connection).

Both are compatible with PC, Mac, and Android.

Label sizes:

2.5"(w) x 1"(h)
2.5"(w) x 3""(h)

Receipt Printer:

We recommend the Epson TM-T88VI receipt printer, model number C31CE94A9801.

It offers direct WiFi, ethernet or USB connection. We do not support the Bluetooth connection option.

We also support the Epson TM-T20ii. This is a more affordable option but does not have direct WiFi capability. It can be adapted to wireless use using an Epson approved wireless USB dongle (model OT-WL02), or by connecting the ethernet cable to a wireless router.

Both models are thermal printers, which means you don't have to worry about replacing ribbons.

Printer Supplies:

Receipt paper:

  • Thermal rolls in standard sizes can be purchased at any office-supply store.

Barcode labels:

  • Dimensions: 2.5"(w) x 1"(h) or 3"x3"
  • If you're using a standard 8.5x11" office printer, you will need Avery 5160 sheet labels. (30 per sheet)
