Barcode Format

Barcode Format

The barcode's format was set in collaboration with Minitex to uniquely identify patrons and items in our region.  The barcode is a 14-digit identifier used only for these purposes and should be unique to the assigned institution.

Barcode Parameters:

  1. 1st digit indicates the barcode type, 2 for a patron barcode or a 3 for an item barcode.
  2. Next 4 digits or digits 2-5 are the library's code, for the PALS test library it’s 9999.
  3. The next 8 digits or digits 6-13 the unique code for the patron or item. These are usually just the next available number in the sequence.
  4. The last digit, digit 14, is a check digit, calculated using Mod 10 algorithm.
  5. For the printed format the majority of our libraries use Codabar, though Code 39 is also supported.

Example, using the Mod 10 algorithm calculate check digit from SimplyCalc. Used to figure out the check digit for a patron, 12345678, at the PALS test library, 9999

Minnesota State Patron barcodes:

Many identification card systems assign barcodes to the patron's when card is created. This number should be unique to the student or faculty/staff. The number should not be re-used within a set amount of time, ie how long it takes for a student to graduate. When the machine is configured to create barcodes the check digit should be included in the identifier format. It is recommended that your campus IT works with the system office to load your barcodes to ISRS.
