What does it mean when my file is processing?

If you have uploaded a large file (such as a video file) or uploaded many files at once, you may see a screen when you try to view a file that says that the file is processing and to check back later.

When files are uploaded to Permanent, they go through a few processing steps to preserve the files, extract metadata, and create thumbnails and viewable versions of the file. The first step when files are uploaded is storage on our preservation servers, so don't worry -- your files have uploaded successfully and are preserved!

Depending on the size or number of files, it may take some time after files are successfully uploaded and stored before they are viewable within Permanent. We are working on making this process faster so you can view your files sooner! If your files are still not viewable in Permanent within a few hours, ensure that they are file types that we support for viewing, or contact us for further assistance.
