How to back up SWCS when using an online backup service

Summary

This article describes how to perform a backup of your Solatech Window Covering software which can be sent to an online backup service.

Note: This article is not specific to any of the online backup services, rather it explains the process, what files should be backup up and the location.

More Information

The general process for backing up SWCS to an online backup service is as follows:

  1. Backup the various SWCS data files using Solatech backup
  2. Direct your online backup service to include this file in their backup.

Making a Backup

Note: Backups must be done form the computer on which the company database resides. Backups can not be done from a workstation.

  1. Run the Solatech Window Covering Software.
  2. Open the company that you want to backup.
  3. From the File menu, click Other Company Functions, Backup.
  4. Select the data which you want to backup. All three options backup the company database. It's the company database that contains all the orders, customers, discounts, etc.
  5. Select the file which will contain the backup. Again, this needs to be a location on your computer when using an online backup service.
  6. Click Start

A few notes on backups

  • You only need to backup the product files if you have created your own products or have made changes to Solatech products - for example the stock products
  • You only need to backup reports or other files it you have custom reports or labels, e-mail templates, etc.
  • Stock reports, templates, etc - those supplied by Solatech, are never backed up.
  • Users do not need to exit the software or stop what they are doing in order for a backup to proceed.
  • Like the company database, attachments are always backed up.

Including the backup file in the online backup service

  • Each online backup service backs up files differently and because of this Solatech cannot document the process used by those services.
  • Regardless of the process used, make sure to include the Solatech backup file you created in step 5 above.
