How to Use a Backed up Log File to Generate a Report

How to Use a Backup Log File to Generate a Report

This is how we can temporarily restore the backup log file, use it to generate a report, and then return the current live data back in place.

The backed of the file is stored in the sub-directory \Backup on the Flash Drive of the Handheld

You will see a list of files like this:

in this example, the 1st tag: date of May 8th 2015_time of 20:12_tag serial # 0.400.084.718

This tells us the date and time that we backed up this Tag.

In order to use the data on the backup log file, we need to very carefully save the existing log file for this tag off to the side, copy this backup file into the active log directory, use the log to generate our report and then put the log file that we saved off to the side back in live use.

Here is an example of how we do this:

1)   Backup the Current Live Log file by changing its name:

On the Device under:

The current name of the file: 0.400.084.718.log

Rename to: 0.400.084.718.log.sav

2)   Copy your log file that is in the Backup directory that you would like to use to your PC by dragging it from:

\Flash\Application Data\HardTrack\Ver# 3.0.X.X\datafiles\New Concrete Monitor\Backup

3)   Rename the file you copied to your PC, for example:

Current name of file: 853025_2012_0.400.084.718.log

Rename to: 0.400.084.718.log

Note: The file name of the log file must be in the exact format as above or HardTrack will not detect it.

4)   Drag the file that you just renamed on you PC into the \log sub-directory:

\Flash\Application Data\HardTrack\Ver# 3.0.X.X\datafiles\New Concrete Monitor\Log

You might receive a warning that you are replacing an existing file.  If this happens, you did not successfully save the current live data file.  Try that again before copying the file.

5)   Open the project that contained the log file that you want to run the report for and run your report.

6)   After you have what you need from the old backed-up log file.  You need to delete that file and rename the “sav” version back to its original name to put everything back in place.

Delete:

\Flash\Application Data\HardTrack\Ver# 3.0.X.X\datafiles\New Concrete Monitor\Log\0.400.084.718.log

Rename:

From: \Flash\Application Data\HardTrack\Ver# 3.0.X.X\datafiles\New Concrete Monitor\Log\0.400.084.718.log.sav

To: \Flash\Application Data\HardTrack\Ver# 3.0.X.X\datafiles\New Concrete Monitor\Log\0.400.084.718.log

Note: There are other ways to accomplish this process.  For example you could copy the entire \Log sub directory on to your PC in a safe place, use the old log file and then copy the entire \log sub directory from your PC back to the device.

If you make a mistake and need to recover the live log file information, you may be able to do that by simply reading the active tag again from the active Project.  This will gather all the temperature logs and update the file that you copied in from the backup so that it can be used correctly in your live project.
